COURSE OBJECTIVES

To enhance stakeholders’ understanding of climate change and sustainable development by increasing their knowledge and skills, particularly among policy and decision makers, regulators, practitioners, developers, and other affected or interested parties

  • Vulnerability, Risks, and Impacts of Climate Change focus on Addressing loss and damage at global, national, local, sectoral, and cross-cutting levels
  • Climate Change Governance and Negotiations focus on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), international and national/local governance frameworks, and negotiation processes
  • Climate Change Mitigation focus on Approaches to mitigation, including GHG emission reduction strategies and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS).
  • Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Pathways focus on Strategies for building adaptive capacity and resilience in communities and ecosystems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the science of climate change, including global warming and greenhouse gas dynamics.
  • Analyze climate change vulnerabilities, risks, impacts, and loss and damage across global, national, local, sectoral, and cross-cutting contexts.
  • Explain multilateral environmental agreements, governance frameworks, and negotiation processes at international, national, and local levels.
  • Apply knowledge of climate change mitigation strategies, including greenhouse gas reduction measures and emissions trading systems.
  • Identify and design adaptation and resilience pathways suitable for different sectors and communities. Integrate gender perspectives and gender-responsive frameworks into climate change and development initiatives. Mainstream climate change considerations into planning, policies, and decision-making processes.
  • Assess the interlinkages between climate change and sustainable development to inform holistic responses

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

The course is designed for practitioners and technical staff across various levels and sectors in Tanzania, including government institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), and private sector stakeholders. The training will be held at the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA), University of Dar es Salaam, Mwalimu Nyerere Main Campus, Dar es Salaam. It will combine lectures, presentations, case studies, group activities, and a field excursion. Fees are TZS 1,500,000 for local non-students, TZS 800,000 for local students, USD 500 for foreign students, and USD 1,200 for foreign non-students, while the field excursion costs TZS 600,000 for nationals and USD 500 for foreigners. The fees cover tuition, course materials, a certificate of attendance, lunch, and tea/refreshments, while participants responsible for their own travel and accommodation (affordable options can be recommended).
